13 Times Egyptians Excelled at Being Fatayeen in 2016

$

I’ve been told on various occasions this month that my social media addiction has become obnoxious and it’s time for a digital-free and peaceful break. In my 12 hours away from Facebook, I felt like Nelly Kareem in Ta7t ElSaytara, itching and suffering to keep my fingers away from my phone to read all about the drama that is happening non-stop on my beloved apps.

The separation made me realize that the one thing I have become emotionally dependent on is my fellow Egyptians’ ability to make anything sound real. We love making up stories, we love sharing them even when they defy every sense of logic and we choose to believe them for the sake of a three-second-long “OMG” moment.

Here are all the viral posts where Egyptians loved being fatayeen in only the first month and a half of 2016:

Let’s start with the biggest eshteghala of the year: the man who was praised by 90 million Egyptians for doing nothing. This is 2016’s Mr. X

A brilliant Egyptian decided and succeeded to convince us that this Italian model is Hanan ElKoiffera

People started linking the condom prank to Gihan Fadel’s movie roles because apparently, she’s Ahmed Malek’s mom. Commenters were enraged and the level of delusion was hilarious

We decided it’s Mohamed Henedy’s birthday and suddenly, the guy gets thousands of birthday wishes out of nowhere

Ibrahim Saeed couldn’t leave the Ahmed Ezz/Zeina saga alone. We all shared his comment, but the joke was on us because it’s a six-year-old photo and that’s not her kid

Is there a deeper meaning behind this statement? Maybe it’s a political code

How The New Facebook Reactions Buttons Are Perfect For Egyptian Drama

giphy-2

Finally, after months of waiting, Facebook’s new reactions button are coming alive worldwide in the next couple of days. “Love”, “haha”, “wow”, “sad” and “angry” are the latest expressions that took a year of research to refine.

Honestly, we were terrified of the possibility of a dislike button. With all the harsh comments people leave on our accounts, we can live without the additional embarrassment. Luckily, it is nowhere to be found. However, we are 100% sure that Egyptian sarcasm and the new reactions buttons will perfectly blend.

The perfect response to people’s stupidity

56167fe9bec95-graphics-labels-edit-56167db879bfe 5

“La takhrog qabl 2an taqoul sob7an Allah.”

“I found Allah written on an egg.”

Posts like: “A mermaid was found in Alexandria and you will never guess what happened next.”

The passive aggressive response

56167fe9bec95-graphics-labels-edit-56167db879bfe 4

Your high school frenemy: “I met the man of my dreams.”

Your hot friend who never eats pizza: “I have an amazing figure because I love CrossFit”

Every Egyptian girl: “As7aby ketir. Ana influencer”

Your ex: “Life goes on.”

How many times have you embarrassed yourself by liking divorce or illness statuses? Now we have a way of showing compassion without being misunderstood as insensitive pricks

56167fe9bec95-graphics-labels-edit-56167db879bfe 6

“I’m having an operation next week.”

“My car was totally crashed on the Ring Road this week.”

“I hate my job.”

Anyone who dares write cheesy hashtags, send them a heart so they shut the hell up and save us from their sappiness *gag*

56167fe9bec95-graphics-labels-edit-56167db879bfe 2

#ToTheMoonAndBack, #PartnerInCrime #WeDidIt or #Hubby

Ya Rab, we are praying that this emoji takes care of the constantly offended Facebook commenters. We can definitely live without their rants. If we’re lucky, they’ll just use this face:

56167fe9bec95-graphics-labels-edit-56167db879bfe 7

The always offended commenter: “Enough with the objectification.”

The girl who turns every post that has nothing to do with women into: “Feminism this, feminism that.”

Grammar police

Egypt haters

Facebook preachers

Only those worthy of a LOL get this emoji; as for all the users deprived of a sense of humour, they get the fake “yay”

Well, if you’ve been living under a rock the last few weeks, the #What_Matters_The_Most hashtag has been taking over social media by storm, from Twitter to Instagram and Facebook, where everyone is taking the chance to express how they truly feel about that one thing that means everything to them.

9 Reasons Why We Hate Facebook Memories

Memories are often regarded as a good thing, a way to cherish the beautiful moments. But the damage some memories cause by reliving them can be hard to patch up.

Facebook’s “On This Day” feature offers you all sorts of memories and forces you to revisit past moments, whether you like it or not.

Here’s why we think it’s not such a good idea:

1. Not all memories are good. Period.

large

Who would want to remember the day they lost someone special, the day they got fired or the day their pet died? No one.

2. We share random/silly things at random moments

blah-blah-blah

That does not make it something worth being reminded of.

3. Relationships are fragile

ce0f7535f1a0fbcc59f523cc364195f6

In five year’s time, all your photos will probably be with people you have nothing to do with now.

4. It’s sure to make you feel nostalgic

No, not a good thing.

5. Even if the memory is a good one, there’s no guarantee it’s going to brighten your day

200_s

Often, the present is not as simple and as inviting as the past may seem.

6. Change is inevitable

burning_the_past1-w510

The things you obsessed about two years ago are no longer an issue.

7. It can get boring

facebook-ceo-mark-zuckerberg

There’s nothing interesting about repeating yourself.

8. It makes you dwell so much on the past

when-to-break-up-with-boy-friend

How are you expected to move on if memories of your ex appear unexpectedly at the top of your newsfeed every other day.

9. It can be a source of distress

lizlemon

With yet still unaccomplished plans and unattainable dreams, you can’t help but feel stuck in life. Why the constant reminder?

The minute you turn off the alarm, before your vision is even clear, you are Instagramming

10 Signs You’re Hopelessly Addicted to Instagram

By Madonna Victor

Instagram is cool, but sometimes the addiction gets out of control and all hell breaks loose.

You have at least 3 photo editing applications on your phone

1

“Elmawdo3 kbeer awe.”

When you hear the word “vacation” the first thing that comes to your mind is Instagram

2

“Sawareny 3nd elba7r w ana msh wakhda bali.”

The 11th like is your favorite

3

“Ana negma khalas yalahwy.”

You take a photo of/with everything

4

“Sawareny ganb el vaza de.”

Your photos are 85% selfies

5

“Amoora janet.”

You know the difference between every filter

6

“Inkwell w Willow msh zay ba3d la2.”

But choosing the right filter is hard

7

“Elmawdo3 msh sahl awe kda 3ala fekra.”

Hashtags are important too, but you know when to use them and how many of them is enough

8

#NoFilter #Ana7elwaKdaBgd #7a2ee2y

You check Instagram every hour to know what’s happening, you don’t wanna miss a thing, right?

9

“5 da2aye2 dol momkn ye7sal fehom balawyy.”

The 1st thing you think about when buying a new phone is the camera quality

10

“Mobile gded ya3ny selfies a7la, ma3roofa,”

Egyptian Internet Enraged by Sexist Etisalat Campaign

Etisalat Misr’s latest campaign “El far2 ma been el awlad w el banat” has been making waves on social media… and not the good kind.

etisalat2

The campaign started with a few pictures that showed how boys and girls react to different situations, such as boys supposedly taking no time to get ready, while girls take as long as days.

The Egyptian Internet was mildly upset, but didn’t take action until this now-deleted post that caused everyone to go freakin’ nuts:

You were probably trying to be funny, Etisalat, and failed epically. Sexism is not a good look — on anyone, but especially not on one of the country’s biggest and most visible brands.

Bride Invites Mohamed Hamaki to Her Wedding in a Viral Facebook Status and Her Dream Is Coming True

We absolutely live for these moments of big dreams and hopeless romance. Egyptian bride-to-be Kah Ra Mana wrote the cutest and most adorable thing we’ve seen all week. Forget about Taylor Swift and Justin Timberlake prom invitations, because we just got our Egyptian version of a celebrity crush and a simple dream.

The bride stated yesterday on Facebook that she was about to do the craziest thing she’s ever thought of, explaining that anyone who knows her would understand her 11-year-long dream that singer Mohamed Hamaki attends her wedding.

Untitled1

Since the bride won’t be having a wedding party, her dream is that Hamaki attends her Katb Ketab. She doesn’t even want him to sing, her only dream is for him to be there. The status went viral and the star himself received the invitation and said he will be the first one there. I love this so much, every bride deserves a fairytale night and Hamaki just made her wish come true with a simple status.

I have faith in the power of social media and I wish I thought about this before my wedding. I would have invited Dhafer L’Abidine or maybe I would have asked Hany Adel to sing my first dance song. Sigh!

I Accept the Fact That I’m Not on Social Media and So Should You

social-buster

“You don’t have Instagram? Like, how? What do you do all day?” I walk around all day like a zombie, obviously. I mean, what purpose could my life have when I don’t have Instagram or Snapchat? When people find out that you  don’t use social media, they pretty much look at you like you’ve suddenly grown another head, or worse they’ll pretend and tell me “it’s okay” and that “it’s not for everybody,” then smile and nod their heads as if I’m a child asking for candy before dinner. I mean, thanks. I know it is, but do you? As hard as it is to believe, some people don’t really like social media that much and don’t feel the need to inform everybody of what they’re doing every minute of every day.

I get that it’s horrifying to think that I can go to a restaurant, eat and not just to take a picture to get 88 likes on my Instagram. When I go out with my friends I actually like to spend time with my friends and not spend most of the time taking 999 selfies, and then spending the rest of the evening deciding which filter to use. I know what kind of life am I actually leading, one where my phone is not an extra limb. I’m not a slave to my phone battery that dies every 20 minutes. I refuse to spend the entire day attached to a wall so I could use my phone for five minutes to repeat the cycle.

I understand the intrigue of social media. I do! I swear! Like, what other way could I find out that my mom’s third cousin’s ex-husband is doing. As hard as it sounds, some people choose to pass on that excitement and lead a quieter and less dramatic life, and YOU have to respect that!

WE SAID THIS: I don’t need you to save me from the boredom that is my life, I have accepted my fate and so should you.

Stop Making Fun of the ‘Lower-Class’ Egyptians Enjoying Their Summer Vacation

$
0
0

Social media can be a ‘Regina George’ clone. It can play games with your head. It can call you names, both directly & indirectly. It can create sarcastic memes. It can hurt. Every now and then in the non-judgemental, educated and ‘open-minded’ Egyptian society, a group of people become Regina George’s new victim. Their recent catch: The ‘lower class’ Egyptians enjoying their summer vacation.

Here’s how it usually goes down: someone uploads a picture (like the one below) of a group of Egyptians ‘3ala ad 7alhom’ making the most out of the sun, sea and sand (just like the rest of us) paired with a bitchy-ass caption making fun of their attire – mostly – or the food they’ve packed with them, or any other observation they can get their fangs into.

I honestly just don’t get it. I really can’t seem to see the logic behind it. Every weekend everyone ‘in our society’ heads out to Sahel. We book parties, we lay by the beach hoping to catch that perfect bronze shade, we BBQ in our gardens and just basically want to have a good time; it’s a universal thing you guys! Do we get judged for our behaviors? No. Do we get posts on social media laughing about our (to them) ‘skimpy’ attire? No. Does our spending a mini-fortune every weekend affect their ‘cheap’ summer vacation in Sharm on the beach? No. So why is it always us? Why do we always insist on bringing down a major part of the Egyptian population just because how conservative they dress, the way they eat, or how they talk?

Nothing boils my blood more than seeing someone laugh at someone who’s different to them, simply because of where and what family or society they were born into. You would probably be swimming in the sea in full attire if you were born into a family who couldn’t afford your CAC education, and instead went to a regular public Egyptian school. Surprise! Look, when it comes down to it, the truth of the matter is that you probably wont be sharing the same beach with the people you poke fun of. So seriously, cut them some slack. Do you and let them do them —it really REALLY isn’t as difficult as it seems.

Also, please save the whole hygiene discussion for someone else, it’s the bloody sea guys, whales poop in there all the time. And, if you’re going to go for the pool discussion, check out any American public pool, its full of people swimming in their clothes, 3ashan 3o2det el khawaga bas (see below). The mo7agabat maillot is made for the water and you’re probably going to catch an infection from all the kids peeing in the pool or from the pool-man slacking off on his job rather than by someone who’s swimming in a t-shirt. So pretty much the problem here is your big head stuck way up your ass and it’s making you uncomfortable, judgmental and basically just not a very nice person overall. Let me help you pull that out…there you go.

Egyptian Dream Interpreter Claims Dreaming About a Facebook Block Means You Don’t Pray

El 7aya channel’s ‘Ayoha Alsada Entabeho‘ talk show just presented a dream interpretation in full millennial mode. The show invited Mostafa Fathalla, a dream interpreter for a little chat, and boy it was hilarious.

Show host Hala Fakher asked him what is on every lover’s mind in 2016. What does it mean if you get blocked on Facebook by your fiancée in a dream? Fathalla immediately confirmed that a Facebook block means that you absolutely do not pray. Why? Because Facebook means social interaction and that could only mean prayer. This is epic to say the least. Fakher was clearly making fun of the unexpected interpretation that perfectly fits the digital era.

Here’s How You Can Support Cancer Patients in the Middle East

Black and white photos took our timelines by storm these past few days. Somehow, this photo challenge is supposed to spread awareness of cancer patients. However these pictures don’t show anything cancer related. They’re just previously taken selfies that have the black and white filter on.

People have been divided in two takes on this challenge; accepted or unaccepted?

Challenge Accepted

People who have accepted the challenge, and mentioned their friends in the comments to tag along, find that a small gesture like this will make people scrolling up and down their timelines remember the people fighting cancer and pray for them.

Challenge Unaccepted

However, people who thought that this gesture was “unacceptable” had a much deeper analysis into it – the shocking part of this counterargument is that it was actually started by actual cancer patients or people who have lost loved ones to cancer.

Some thought it was just another narcissistic campaign, showing off some selfies with a black and white filter, that shows nothing to actually support cancer fighters, not even a black ribbon. “Everyone on Facebook is aware of cancer, so you cannot play the awareness card, particularly as this time it’s not even a *type* of cancer,” argued Rebecca Wilkinson, a cancer patient in a post that got almost 18 thousand shares.

“The ‘anything that promotes awareness is good’ argument isn’t valid; terrorist acts promote awareness of terrorism, but we don’t encourage them… All this ‘campaign’ does is antagonise many people who have cancer and who need actual help, not a selfie. Someone cunningly decided to start a viral Facebook campaign to achieve precisely nothing, and they USED cancer in their attempt to go viral. That’s SICK and TWISTED.”

“This is a picture of my Mom who died of brain cancer taken after she had her radiation and chemotherapy session. She only lived six months after she was diagnosed. We fought for her til the end. It was one of the most agonizing experience me and my family has ever had so it pains me to see how this sensitive topic is being misconstrued in social media.” Che Bautista shared her late mom’s picture instead, frustrated at how people use such a heart-throbbing, sensitive case into a self-marketing campaign disguised under the cloak of cancer.

The campaign unquestionably backfires – if it’s not how this challenge started, and all of that rant is just over-analysing, at least this is how the people who the campaign supposedly started for felt about it.

How to support cancer patients in the Middle East and North Africa

1) Donate

You can donate to one of the cancer institutions in your country. It doesn’t need to be something big, anything you can let go off would be great. Some people even cut their hair in support of fighters undergoing chemotherapy and send their cut-off hair to be made into a wig.

2) Visits

Via 57357

Or you can donate your time. Schedule an hour or two every month and spend it with the children fighting cancer in 57357 for example. Dress up like Superman or Wonderwoman and make a show for the kids.

3) Marathons

The marathon culture in the Middle East has been very well-integrated with causes like fighting cancer. There’s at least a marathon every month if you keep looking closely at Facebook events.

WE SAID THIS: Praying for the loved ones who died because of cancer, and the ones still battling it right this very second.

Donia Samir Ghanem Is Being Bullied on Instagram for Wearing a Dress and It’s Disgusting

What is going on with Egypt’s social media this week? Donia Samir Ghanem posted a photo of herself on Instagram performing at her Marassi concert and the Internet basically lost it. Fans left the harshest comments, accusing the star of going against her religion, and the whole reason fans even liked her, was because of “e7teramha” (her respect).

I started literally stalking some of these people who left comments publicly slut-shaming Ghanem. First thing I’ve noticed is that most of these people leave hateful comments on every post they come across, which basically says more about them than the actress and singer. The second thing that was as obvious as their miserable souls was that most of them were women who posted photos of themselves in hijab.

This brings us to a very important conclusion, and this one goes out to her bullies. Just because you are covered up, it does not mean you are mo7tarama (respectable), and based on the language you used on Ghanem’s post, you are the furthest thing away from mo7tarama. Does the religion you accuse her of going against support the way you criticized her and the names you called her? I highly doubt it.

The real embarrassment and disappointment is your attitude, not her short Sahel dress. Who gave you all the right to call a married woman and a mother a slut because you don’t like what she’s wearing? You don’t sound mo7tarama yourself. Get a life of your own instead of staring at screens and judging people from the comfort of your miserable couches. I keep telling people there is a freakin’ unfollow button.

WE SAID THIS: Unlike, unfollow or block the lady and move the hell on, haters.

Aya Mostafa Shuts Down Her Haters Like a Boss After Taking Her Veil Off

Just two weeks ago, video blogger Aya Mostafa became one of the most talked about women on social media after she decided to take off her veil. Mostafa felt the need to explain her unexpected move to her 5 million followers and it did not end well. The followers who used to fall on the floor laughing with every video she posts, soon turned into harsh judgmental preachers. From people calling her a kafra (infidel) to others accusing her of encouraging other women to do the same, this is just an example of how entitled her followers are.

It will never make sense to me how people think they have the right to make a woman feel worthless for being honest about her social and emotional struggles. This is the ugly price of social media fame. It’s all fun and games until you’re the victim of the constantly offended Facebookers for just being who you are.

Two days ago, Mostafa announced that Lamis ElHadidy invited her to the show Hona El3asema and people went crazy. Yet, we take our hats off to Mostafa who was the definition of a millennial who instead of defending herself in words, went all the way and shut down her haters with memes. We love it.

Shady Srour Just Got So Real About What It’s Like to Live with Depression

Shady Srour needs no introduction. It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of him or not, you just know him. Srour is one of the most successful YouTubers the Middle East had ever witnessed. He made endless videos, but the one video he made that went absolutely viral was the “lama abouk yt7wl” (when your dad transforms) video, and this was his starting point of fame. He is the first YouTuber in the Middle East who reached two-hundred million views after a year of making videos. Throughout his journey, he was invited by the famous TV presenter Motaz El-Demerdash for an interview several times.

He started writing his own scripts, making videos, and acted mostly all the parts. According to one of Srour’s interviews with El-Demerdash, he would always look for feedback from his audience and would always try his best to interact with them, he would also keep on refreshing his social media pages every couple of minutes to read the comments the audience left, to see how many views the video had reached, and how many likes so far.

Srour’s social media posts always clearly show that he’s trying his best to succeed, he recently wrote the script and acted along with Bushra in Titanic, the first Egyptian YouTube film ever made. The famous writer and director Amr Salama, shared the movie on his Facebook’s personal account and wrote that he firmly believes that this is one of the most important steps in expressing art. Srour was anxiously waiting to see the audience’s reaction, it was not what he expected. He later on updated his status saying that the movie wasn’t to the audience’s expectations because lots of parts had to be cut off.

We all, at some point in life start getting super fed up when we try, and try and we feel like we haven’t accomplished anything. Srour, unfortunately hit that point, but he hit it to the point where he wants to end his life…and of course, some people have to be so ignorant and not take it seriously. Why do we only look at the tip of the iceberg? What about the depths of the water? We all have a story that no one knows about…we definitely need more love in this world.

Here’s what he posted on his Facebook

The post reads: “I’m 21 years old, yes. But I’m concerned about life and my future…I am sick and tired of this, I’ve had enough. I no longer want to live and I do not want to speak to anyone…I am starting to see death as a relief.”

But of course, the tip of the iceberg is only seen…

As soon as Srour posted his status, someone commented saying: “Like, why are you complaining? Shady, you work and you have money. Your parents treat you well and they do not give you a hard time. You have also started traveling and touring the world, you started meeting new people and you also became famous. After all this you want to commit suicide and you’re also depressed? What am I supposed to do with myself, should I burn myself down?!”

Srour couldn’t help but responded to her

Read the post in English below.

Alright, well this is what you see from the outside without actually knowing anything about me…

In the name of God,

  • Did you know that I am fully responsible for myself and that no one helps me financially? I was the one who pushed myself to reach where I am today in such a community where it’s extremely difficult to succeed?
  • Did you know that I am an ambitious person, which means I dream of the impossibilities and how much I suffer every single day when I try and try and do not succeed? Do you know how bad this feels?
  • Did you know that literally everybody I loved let go of me at the time I needed them the most and I was always alone? And when I started being famous and achieving something whoever spoke to me or knew me would talk to me because they needed something from me?
  • Did you know that I am just like any young person living in this country, I suffer from what it is going through economically, socially, and internationally? And every single time I step forward and try to build the first brick in my future a pile of bricks would fall on me and break me apart?
  • Did you know that I currently have lots of issues with my university because I want to study something that I love and I unfortunately have to study something that I am not passionate about and I fail every year along with how bad my academic standard currently is?
  • Do you know how many times I have tried to reach my goal and how many times I have tried to do a lot of things along with trying new strategies and in the end it all just fails and I find myself back at square one? Did you know that I stay alone lamenting at the amount of efforts I have put in and how much money I have spent and towards the end I get nothing?
  • Did you know that my pocket money used to be 300 LE per month until I turned 19 and that I was the one who changed this myself since I never accepted the assigned reality?
  • Did you that I was born with a leg length discrepancy then I had to do a surgery and it stayed impelling me negatively for three years at such a young age? I am still nervously worried about it up to this day. I cannot even stay still standing longer than two minutes. Did you also know that the surgery’s distort is still visible? And that it will stay like visible for the rest of my life? I even Photoshop it each time I upload a picture where my leg is visible.
  • Did you know that I am criticized every day along with the rumors, accusations, and that I’m verbally abused and cursed out in my parents name every day for stuff I haven’t done just because I succeeded in something and made a social video about the community to make people laugh?
  • Did you know that I dream of traveling to live and work abroad in order to not only be local but to be international and every single time I try to travel the embassy rejects my visa request just because I’m Egyptian and young and I might flee?
  • Did you know that I was the most depressed child at the age of 18 because of stuff that has happened to me which are unnecessary to mention and because of how much I was depressed I committed suicide but I somehow made it alive? The distorts of the incident is still visible and will be for the rest of my life.

Should I carry on? I have a lot more to say. Please do not underestimate people’s stories.

WE SAID THIS: Well said, Srour. Do not underestimate people’s stories.

Monday, YouTube launched Batala (“Heroine”), a new hub just for female content creators from MENA, with over 100 women featured. The channel already has more than 1,000 videos, which range from comedy to fitness to education, and so much in between.

It’s safe to say they’re garnering a lot of attention: in two days, the hub’s introductory video has accumulated well over a million views.

Every month, Batala will highlight a new list of creators. From Egyptian amateur film critic Enji Aboul Seoud to Palestinian travel vlogger Haifa Bseiso, the female creators featured on Batala come from a wide range of fields and from all across the Middle East and North Africa. The hub has dozens of playlists and featured content creators.

WE SAID THIS: According to the press release, demand for female-related content is growing; in MENA, the number of hours spent watching female-related videos grew 50% in 2015.

You think you love animals? Well, you don’t! Not as much as the Crown Prince of Dubai at least. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum probably loves animals more than we love TV shows and junk food, and that’s kind of a lot.

Not convinced? Brb while we got our stalking shades on and go through his Instagram to prove our point.
